What to do when you have a day of in Amsterdam? There are a lot of tours, museums and restaurants but there are also things to do in Amsterdam for free! This is our top 7 of free things to do in Amsterdam.

1. Begijnhof
Begijnhof is a court in the city center of Amsterdam built in the 14th century. It’s is in the middle of the busiest part of Amsterdam but if you enter this court you’ll find a calm garden with beautiful houses. This used to be a home for religious women.

2. Ferry to Amsterdam Noord
Take the ferry to Amsterdam Noord at central station. Experience a lot of art at the NDSM-loods, have a drink at PLLEK or Noorderlicht, go to the EYE filmmuseum or visit the Amsterdam tower and have a swing on top of the building (the swing is not free).

3. Markets
There are many markets to visit in Amsterdam. For instance the famous Albert Cuyp market in De Pijp, the Dappermarkt in Oost and the Waterlooplein flee market, all open Monday through Saturday. The Noordermarkt in Jordaan is open on Saturday and don’t forget to go to the flower market!

4. Festivals
Amsterdam has a lot of free festivals every year. There is always something to do especially in summer. There are food festivals, Kingsday, the Amsterdam Light Festival, Gay Pride, Uitmarkt, Grachtenfestival and the Vondelpark concerts.

5. Smallest house
The smallest house of Europe is to be found in Amsterdam. The smallest house is only 2 by 6 meters and is located at Oude Hoogstraat 22 in the red light district. It’s open as a little tea shop.

6. Cheese museum
Not only is the entrance to this place free, you can also try a lot of different cheeses. A good place to find out your taste in Dutch cheese.

7. Public Library
Get to the top floor of the public library (OBA) close to central station. You will experience an amazing view over Amsterdam. It’s open till 22.00 in the evening so you can watch the sun go down!
